Before talking about the best things to do in tetouan city, let’s talk first a little bit about its history.

Tetouan, Tetawin, or Tetaawn is a Moroccan city located in the north  of morocco. Also known as the white Dove because there is a statue in the city center. Tetouan’s history is so ancient, and the remains of a city dating back to the moorish civilization proved that. Tamouda city’s dating back to the third century BC, it was destroyed around the year 40 AD following the events of the Edemon Revolution.

How to get to tetouan city

There are many different ways to reach the city of tetouan :

By plane

There is an airport in Tetouan that you can book flights directly to “Sania Raml Airport”. But if you are arriving in casablanca, you can a flight to tetouan. Also you can book directly from Mohammed V Airport of casablanca to Tetouan city via the following website: (https://www.supratours.ma/).Or take a ride Train from Casablanca, you can book in advance through the official website https://www.oncf-voyages.ma/. You can also fly to Tangiers airport and then take a train or taxi to Tetouan.  How to get from the airport to the city center? :  the distance between Sania Ramel Airport and Tetouan city center is 4km. And the travel time is about 15 minutes. in case you chose to land in the airport of tetouan. After arriving  close to the airport you will find buses that connect the airport to the city center

By ferry

There are several daily cruises linking the cities of Tangier, Tetouan and southern Spain. You can check in one of those websites : site 1      or    site 2

By bus/car

There are several different routes that reach Tetouan from several cities across Morocco. Check with CTM ( http://ctm.ma ) and Supratours (https://www.supratours.ma/)  for the best options for this type of transmission. There are also public buses that are the cheapest but somewhat unreliable and often very crowded.

Self-driving, hiring a private driver may be the quickest and easiest option to get to Tetouan and the surrounding areas. The roads to Tetouan from Tangier are very good. You can also drive from Fez to reach Tetouan (a mountainous but very picturesque and beautiful way).

Finally, shared taxis are the cheapest option. As with public buses, but not the most comfortable option. You pay for your seat,and you can purchase additional seats but be sure to negotiate the details beforehand.

Where to stay and to eat

where to stay?: in tetouan city, you can stay in hotels,in hostels,or in riads or you can rent an apartment. According to your budget, you can choose and you can use airbnb or booking to book in advance.

where to eat?: In tetouan thare are many good restaurants.  But i recommend two for experience. The first is “Sed Nakhla” and the second  is “Diamond tetouan”  a restaurant, cafe and bakery. Where to go and the best things to do in tetouan

Once you arrive in Tetouan, you will have plenty of things to do and  see. Starting with city landmarks through the old and new city. The market, the ghetto, the Spanish region, the Riviera Square, the España Square, and others. And everywhere you will visit, you can evoke its history through this article.

The old city (la medina) and the seven gates

The old city has monuments and landmarks that tell stories, and narrate events. Whose ancient buildings are surrounded by walls, some of which extend for more than 5000km. And like any fortified city, it had gates that entered the visitor and the merchant, and prevented the invader. These gates were of great importance in regulating the movement of exit and entry to and from the city. While the decorations and creative designs of their arches give a special elegance to the city. The seven gates of Tetouan are:


Bab Al-Uqla
(the gate of the wise people)
It was built in the beginning of the 16th century, and it was called so,because on its outskirts the wise men of the city used to meet. Its external facade embodies a gradual layout similar to the Almohad and Marinid doors.

Bab Al-Makaber
(The gate which lead to the tombs)

It ‘s located in the north of the old city, one of the oldest gates of the city. Its construction dates back to the middle of the 16th century. It was called by this name because it overlooks the Islamic cemetery.

Bab Al-Tut
(the gate of the mulberries)
The gate dates back to the 16th century AD, while the new door was built in the early 19th century, and the reason for its name is due to the mulberry trees that were located outside, and it is located west of the old city.

Bab Al-Nwader
It is located to the west of the fortress surrounding the old city, and its construction dates back to the 16th century, after the urban development that El-Ayoun neighborhood knew and the arrival of huge numbers of Moriscos in the first half of the 17th century.

Bab Al-saida
Bab means door and al-saida means upper egypt. It’s located west of the walls of the ancient city, and its construction dates back to the 16th century. It was named after the tomb of Sidi Al-Saidi, who cames to tetouan from Upper Egypt , his mausoleum is located some meters from the door.

Bab Al-Jyaf
 Its location is north of the ancient city walls, and its construction dates back to the 16th century.

Bab Al-Rmoz
Bad means door and Al-Rmoz means symbols and here the meaning exactly  is noble people. It’s  located south of the wall surrounding the old city, and Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, after it was built on land owned by a noble family of  coming from Andalusia.

Tetouan towers

Most of the towers are distributed in the southern part of the city, which are 12 towers, as they had an important role in guarding and monitoring, and these towers differ according to the importance and to the  location.


Borj al-sakala “Scaffold Tower”:  near to bab Al-Uqla This tower was built around the year 1830 during the reign of Sultan Moulay Abd al-Rahman, as the inscription above its main door dates to, which reads as follows: “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This blessed tower was built by his servant and benefactor, Muhammad Ashash, in the year 1246 AH.

Tetouan museums

Modern Art Center of Tetouan

It is located on Al Massira Street in the old train station building in Tetouan, and the architect Julio Rodriguez Roda designed it in May 1918. He combined in its style between the original Moroccan architecture and the Spanish architecture, click here for more.

Archaeological Museum of Tétouan

Archaeological Museum It is one of the most famous landmarks of the city of Tetouan, which provides the visitor with valuable detailed information about the history of Tetouan and the civilizational developments that the city has known through a group of archaeological pieces and collectibles, some of which date back to prehistoric times, such as metal coins, bronze and ceramic artifacts, with a huge literary library containing about 60,000 volumes. Which talks about the history of the Maghreb region. Perhaps one of the most popular holdings in the Archaeological Museum of Tetouan is the piece made of mosaics from the Roman era, which is known as the Three Graces. click here to know more.

The Ethnographic Museum

Ethnography Museum One of the most beautiful places in Tetouan. Ville nouvelle (the new city)

Villa Nouvelle One of the best tourist places in Tetouan that you must visit during your vacation because of its wonderful and ancient design surrounded by fountains, greenery and elegant palm trees, with a privileged location on Mohammed V Avenue, one of the most famous main squares of Tetouan, among a group of its most famous palaces and historical buildings such as the Royal Palace, Mohammed II Palace, Al-Basha Mosque, the Spanish Church of Victoria.

Feddan square

This square attracts daily many tourists from all over the world. A visitor to the city of Tetouan cannot miss the opportunity to visit it and enjoy the panoramic view of the white city and take some souvenir photos.

Dar al_tair

It is a statue that the people of Tetouan call “Dar Al-Tair”. The building is located at the beginning of Mohammed V Street (next to El-Galaa Square), topped by a bronze statue of an eagle or a phoenix, above which a young man stands on the balcony of a building bearing the characteristics of Spanish architecture.

Tamuda city

The city of Tamuda is one of the current archaeological cities located near the city of Tetouan, which is the ruins of an ancient Roman city dating back to the third century BC. The excavations discovered at the site proved the succession of two cities on the site of Tamuda. A Berber city built in the 200th century BC and a Roman city built after the destruction of the city in 40 AD during the Idemon revolution. The second city is a square-shaped fortress surrounded by stone-built walls, with twenty towers and four gates.
